ALICE HEWITT
ARCHITECTURE STUDENT

This project is a proposal for a hybrid building on the site of an old grain silo on Poole Quay. The building is divided into a series of elements connected by a large landscaped public area. There will be a nursery, a science center, a public education centre, four shops and four apartments. This will provide Poole with an outdoor space that transports the public to a greener more natural space. The building is designed to engage lots of different people from various professions and age groups to raise awarenesse of the benefits of close proximity with nature as well as the necessity of sustainability. The project explores the possibilities of a different kind of educational system and seeks to set an example for possible future schools. Steiner Schools have an appreciation of nature that is deeply embedded in the student’s lives. The children in the nursery will be given an allotment that they tend to every year that teaches them practical skills and allows them to learn through their environment. They also engage in wood working, cooking, and other practical activities. A strong emphasis is placed on sustainability and children are given the opportunity to play and learn in nature. In a world where education is moving further and further towards standardised testing and examinations it is important that these alternative edcuational systems be given the opportunity to grow. This project will give the people of Poole the potential to explore this method of education whilst also providing workshops on beekeeping, gardening and other related activities for all ages. It aims to act as a catalyst for even greater change towards a more sustainable city.
