Dialogues of Use and Form

The Music School Project in the second term of the second year of the BA (Hons) Architecture degree sought to design a music school for Poole, England. Poole is a relatively small city with a population of around 30,000 people. Any sense of community in Poole’s dense and bustling city centre is diluted by the physical barriers that obstruct pedestrian flow between areas and accessibility to all areas. The design of the Music School seeks to remove the zonal divides of its context and provide Poole with a city centre that brings together its culture, leisure, education and community into an accessible, urban public space. The design process for the music school began by exploring the use of layers to create a space that did not form boundaries or obstructions and allowed circulation throughout the entire area as well using space efficiently. Creating a route through a space that encourages people in also creates pockets of social space. Balconies or rooftops provide intimate areas for recreation and leisure but maintains visibility throughout the building.
